    <Paragraph position="0"> In this paper, we proposed a system which identifies discourse relations between two successive sentences in Japanese. On top of the lexical information previously proposed, we used phrasal pattern information. Using phrasal information improves accuracy 12%, from 53% to 65%. The accuracy is comparable to human performance. There are many future directions, which include 1) applying other machine learning methods, 2) analyzing discourse relation categorization strategy, and 3) including a longer context beyond two sentences.</Paragraph>
