    <Paragraph position="0"> Before TAUM was disbanded, Isabelle 1981 voiced the views of the group on a possible course for short- and long-term machine translation R&amp;D activities.</Paragraph>
    <Paragraph position="1"> The difficulties encountered in the AVIATION project convinced the Translation Bureau that a more permanent and broader R&amp;D base would be required for MT to be viable in Canada. In 1983, the Translation Bureau in conjunction with the Canadian Department of Communications, funded a large-scale study to review natural language processing technologies and examine opportunities for Canada in this field.</Paragraph>
    <Paragraph position="2"> The consultants have submitted their report and the two Departments involved now have to determine the best way to implement the recommendations that are made therein. In the area of MT, there would appear to be three fronts on which R&amp;D could be pursued: * the development and integration of various computer aids to human translation within a translator's workstation; null * the application of second-generation MT technology to promising sublanguages (Kittredge 1983); * research on third-generation MT technology.</Paragraph>
