6. Conclusion
</SectionTitle>
    <Paragraph position="0"> In this paper we have argued that lexJcal selection is an important contributing factor to the process of generation, and not just a side effect of grammatical decis/ons. Furthermore, we claim that open-class items are not only conceptually different from closed-class items, but are processed differently as well. Closed class items have no epistemological status other than procedural attachments to conceptual and discourse information. Related to this, we discovered an interesting distinction between two types of closed-class items, distinguished by the knowledge sources necessary to generate them; discourse oriented and proposition-oriented. Finally, we extend the importance of focus information for directing the generation process.</Paragraph>
