    <Paragraph position="0"> We have presented the computational model implemented in the GIST system for referring expressions generation. The model is based on a clear distinction of the various knowledge sources that come into play in the referring process and provides an implementation tbr Martin's theoretical invesl~igatious. An extension of the Centering Theory has been proposed to deal with pronomiualization effectively, exploiting the information provided by the discourse structure on how the reader's flow of attention progresses. Issues of multilinguality are treated by ('ustomizing the selection rules according to the output language.</Paragraph>
