<?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?> <Paper uid="W02-0802"> <Title>Digraph Analysis of Dictionary Preposition Definitions</Title> <Section position="2" start_page="0" end_page="0" type="intro"> <SectionTitle> 1 Introduction </SectionTitle> <Paragraph position="0"> Prepositions have generally been viewed as function words to be discarded in many natural language processing applications. However, prepositions have considerable importance as identifiers of semantic relations tying various elements of a sentence together. Since many prepositions are highly polysemous, it is necessary to develop a finer-grained analyses of their meanings so that the semantic relations can be more accurately identified.</Paragraph> <Paragraph position="1"> We have modeled preposition definitions in a dictionary using directed labeled graphs (digraphs) to identify primitive preposition senses. We have used the definitions from a machine-readable version of a comprehensive English dictionary.</Paragraph> </Section> class="xml-element"></Paper>
