  <Title>Using bilingual dependencies to align words in Enlish/French parallel corpora</Title>

2 Starting hypothesis
</SectionTitle>
    <Paragraph position="0"> The idea is to make use of dependency relations to align words (Debili &amp; Zribi, 1996). The reasoning is as follows (Figure 1): if there is a pair of anchor words, i.e. if two words w1 i (community in the ex- null ample) and w2 m (communaute) are aligned at the sentence level, and if there is a dependency relation between w1 i (community) and w1 j (ban) on the one hand, and between w2 m (communaute) and w2 n (interdire) on the other hand, then the alignment link is propagated from the anchor pair (commu null nity, communaute) to the syntactically connected words (ban, interdire).</Paragraph>
    <Paragraph position="1">  We describe hereafter the overall design of the syntax-based propagation process. We present the results of applying it to three parsed English/French bitexts and compare them to the base-line obtained with the giza++ package (Och &amp; Ney, 2000).</Paragraph>
